Although bone age is good, traditional methods have limitations.
Generally speaking, the difference between bone age and life age is called normal development within (+) 1 years of age, earlier development than 1 year of biological age, and backward development below 1 year of age.
How to detect bone age? In clinic, the wrist X-ray film is usually taken, and then the doctor observes the development of ossification center according to the film taken. The bone age is determined by GP map and TW3 method.

GP atlas is the earliest and complete method of bone age identification. It is mainly based on the paper image album to compare the hand bone X-ray film with the naked eye. This method has many problems, such as strong subjectivity, poor clinical accuracy and so on, which will cause a greater error with the test results.
The other TW3 method, although significantly improved in accuracy compared with the atlas method, has a complex detection process that requires at least 15 minutes to detect a child's bone age. With the progress of the times, parents pay more and more attention to the growth and development of children, and the bone age detection is increasing. Both methods can not meet the current huge market demand.
Artificial intelligence bone age, instantaneous seconds results
When artificial detection is limited, the advantage of AI is obvious. In-depth learning based on a large number of high-quality data, and establish a prediction model, so that bone age detection can become efficient and accurate. But the first thing we need to solve is what we can do to achieve this goal.

Detecting bone age is nothing more than deep learning from images, and we usually think of a graphics processing unit (GPUs). Although graphics processing units (GPUs) are designed to handle images well, data scientists must address the inherent memory limitations of some models.


So Intel and Philips chose another way to use Xeon bone age prediction models, using Intel's Xeon scalable processors and the OpenVINO toolkit. Because Intel-to-Strong Scalable Processors do not have the memory limitations mentioned earlier, they can speed up complex hybrid workloads, including large memory-intensive models common in medical imaging. For large subsets of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, Intel-to-strong scalable processors can better meet the needs of data scientists than GPU-based systems.

The results showed that the speed of the bone age prediction model increased 188 times, from 1.42 images per second of the original benchmark to 267.1 images per second of the final optimization.
Using this model, not only the results will be more objective, but also will greatly reduce the pressure on the doctor to work, so as to better determine the priority of cases, to provide better medical services for more patients while reducing hospital costs.

This efficient and accurate bone age prediction model can even be used in regular physical examinations of primary and secondary school students. The bone age test is added to the annual physical examination arranged by the school to keep an eye on the height of the child. If problems are found, intervention can be made as early as possible to avoid the occurrence of regrets.
Doctors recommend a bone age test at the age of 3-10. The child is just beginning to develop before puberty. Early testing can also tell a child's development.
